Quick Mac question?

So, today I finally got around to taking down my desktop PC and I'm using my Macbook Pro with my standard 22" monitor and blue-tooth keyboard/mouse. My question pertains to the displays. Normally I'll open my MBP and turn it on then close the laptop and everything transfers over to my desktop screen. However, if I open my MBP after everything has booted the display won't boot back up on the actual laptop. Is there something I need to do in the control panel to reactivate the display on the MBP? The webcam and touch controls work just fine but I've got a black display. I don't have the problem if I let it boot from the laptop first then close it after OSX has loaded though.

System Preferences -> Displays -> Click "Detect Displays"

Make sure your notebook's display is open. If you want to bypass all those steps, simply tick "Show displays in menu bar" and you can adjust it from there.
