Default quick linux question

ok so im going to buy my parts finally to upgrade my pc but i do not have the money yet to buy vista and my xp disks are oem and are one time install. im wanting to temporarily run linux until my next check. i do not know much about linux so im needing to know what version is best as far as compatibility wise.

desktop:MB:MSI 890FXA-GD65 AM3 AMD 890FX/AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz 95W Quad-Core Processor/8gigs corsair ram/corsair 650w power supply/Sapphire HD 5870 2GB/ 2tb hd space/ 4 120mm case fans

Oh man you are going to have a TOUGH time with Linux...

The best version that I know is Ubuntu.

Have you thought about Vlite or anything like that? PM me if you want to know more.
