Yep thats basically it, since they can both worktogether one after the other, rather than on one chip where the bandwidth would be slower so less would get passed down.

what about my options for upgrading if i get 2X512MB dual channeled, can i get another set of 2x512MB dual channeled later so i would have a total of 1GB ram?

2GB RAM. Yes, you would, if you have 4 DIMM slots in your motherboard, which most motherboards have nowadays.
