Default Question regarding flash drives

I just bought a 4G flash drive this morning, and I'd like to run some executable programs off of it (Open Office, Dev C++, etc). I know its possible because one of my friends at school does it. I'm just wondering how I go about doing the same thing.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Download this: http://portableapps.com/ it has open office, mozilla firefox and all that. It doesn't have Dev C++ but you can download the portable version of that here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/devcpp-portable

Thanks for the help.

I knew there was a software running the entire show, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me what it was.
