It looks to me that the 4890 and GTX 280 are pretty much evenly matched: Sapphire HD 4890 Review.

That is with its earliest driver. With newer drivers, they improved (though not like the 5xxx)

ATI always seems to do that. They release the cards before the drivers are fully optimized, so there are performance boosts for a while after release.

It was just small boosts like that with every release. Same is happening for the new cards.
