Processor/Mobo compatability

Ok, I appologize for sounding dumb (I know I'm going to say something). I just recently decided that since I go to a Technology school (NYIT) I should probably know something about computers. I've made a few changes to make things run a bit smoother, for example went to Firefox. Now I'm thinking that I need to figure out all about hardware. Most of it seems to be slightly more sensitive versions of the shaped pegs I used to play with in kindergarden The only thing I am having difficulty with is processors being compatable with mobos.

If I have a 2.6GHz Intel Celeron would I be correct in assuming I can plug it into

socket A is not an INTEL based socket, so not it will not work for you celeron. From whatu sed above i do not know what socket you celeron is. Google "everest home edition" and try to get the "majorgeeks.com" mirror to download it. It will analyse your computer assuming the celeron is in the computer you using. It may not be a socket 478, since there are about 3 different sockets celerons have been made on.

once u downlaod that program it will tell u about your celeron and its socket and only then cancu truly know if it is compatible.

Its a 478 Socket, as well as a bunch of other little things I didn't know about my computer.

ok then the first two mobos should work, questino though: why are ureplacingu rmobo, and what are ur computers other specs.

Oh this was more about personal knowledge and curiosity for future upgrades and what not. I also heard recently that eMachines have a tendancy to kick their mother boards, so this is also a 'better safe then sorry' move.

Currently I have a cheap and fairly old eMachines, which slowly but surely is becoming not an eMachine. I dumped the 56k modem, added Radeon 9200, upped RAM to 512. A new hard drive will be in order sometime in the near future. Also I'm researching Linux so I can get away from XP (unless someone here thinks that Linux is a bad move, I don't see there being much of a down side except for the fact I'm lazy).

Also: I don't need a lecture about why eMachines suck. I know all about that. haha

I hear the linux interface takes a while to get used to, if u can the mac os tiger or w/e it is seems to be pretty popular. And there are ways to run it on a non-mac.
