go to start>run> run "msconfig" in the service tab shows all of the services windows starts up, most you dont even need.

The last tab (can't remember the name and i'm at a computer with restricted access) shows every program that starts up when windows loads. You can turn most of them off and it will not hurt your computer. But be careful with programs like firewalls and an anitvirus

A good idea would be to visit http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

This has been recommended in G4 tech TV and Custom PC magazine.

Also you shouldn't use msconfig to disable services in case you disable something that is required for the PC to boot. Type sevices.msc in the run box instead.
