Default problems downgrading from vista

i recently came accross a hp a6400z for a business owner, she asked me to downgrade back to xp, the install seemed to work fine, as the xp pro install cd found the hard drive, formatted it, then copied all the install files without incident, however after rebooting, i find myself in an endless reboot loop... when i boot back into the cd and use repair console i am able to see the windows files and everything as intended, it's as if it's not recognzing xp's boot file, and somehow attempting to use vista's without vista being on the hard drive any longer, i tried rewriting the bootcfg to no avail, please help.

When you formatted did you delete the partition and recreate it?

Your problem may be that the Vista BCD is still written to the drive.
