Default print server

I am thinking of getting a print server for my home network. I have a wired home network and right now the printer is on one of the desktops that needs to be on to use the printer. I have always heard lots of negative feedback whenever I bring up print servers with anyone that has used them. What is the problem with them in general? I have been doing a few searches for them online and looking at the compatibility list from the manufacturers web sites for a few different models. What is the compatibility issue is it the printer model # or is it the operating system that is usually the problem?
Thanks Jim
