Default Possible to bypass memory cards?

By connecting cables from the device that uses the memory card to a card reader and then a portable HD/PC.

For example:

i take any MMS/SD MP3 player and instead of the SD card i run cables from the MP3 player to a SD card reader and from there to a iRiver (which has USB host support) so that when i go to play songs from the mp3 player the info is comming from the iriver.

Its very complicarded to do, but is it theoreticaly possible
