Default possible to build external enclose for internal optical drives?

i have an antec 902, and i want to place an extra fan were the optical drives are suppose to be, and instead of buying external drives can i just use my internal drives if i built a external housing for them? my plan is to make it out of acrylic and just get longer sata cables to run from my mobo to the newly built housing....also would need extensions on the power supply cables.

I dont see why not, you could do that.

They dont HAVE to be inside the pc case.

They will do the same as job, whether they are in the case or not.
