You can insert the hard drive from the computer which you are having the trouble with into your laptop, as the slave drive then put the docs on your laptop and then take the slave hard drive out and reformat.
With getting your docs in you My Documents folder - it's hit or miss, but make sure your username is diff. then your older username, or they could be overwritten.
