Default playing mpeg movies or dvds

what is the best program for playing mpeg movieswhich my kids have downloaded. when they try to play them it goes directly to windows media, which can't play them!

Are you sure they are MEPG? That's like the universal compression that most all players are compatable with.

If you are sure, i use Media Player Classic.

If they are AVI's, look for compressors. Divx would probably be your best bet...

thats ok. i use that too. for dvd's i use powerdvd. its pretty good.

get this, in my dvd player i can play a audio cd, but not a dvd. i downloaded the latest driver for my dvd player,( sony ddu16210) but it still wont play the damn dvds. it lights up as if it is doing something, then it says please insert dvd!!
any ideas?

Not all AVI's use the same codec, so it's not uncommon to be able to play one and not another...

As for your DVD, I'd first make sure the correct disk is associated with the drive. There's probably some option in some menu. Then, once you insert a disk, go to my computer and see if anything shows up on your DVD drive. It sounds like you might have a failing drive...
