Default Phenom II X6 And the Intel I7 980x

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/03/in...blows-us-away/

Far out! 6 Cores! If the i7 is going to be about $1000 i think the Phenom will be about $700 maybe?

Thoughts?

Apparently when single thread technology is the highest priority (or so I hear) some of the cores are automatically disabled and the remaining ones get overclocked?

I heard this a while back tho (and cant get on the above link) anything good on it>?

About time AMD made a 6 core desktop CPU. The 6 core istanbul CPUs have been out forever.

They have a 12 core in the works too.

8 then 12 as I take it, then there is going to be massive change when bulldozer is released. If you don't know much about the architecture of bulldozer, it is definitely worth researching.

There might also be AMD models between 6 and 12 with disabled cores. I would assume 10 but who knows, amd made a triple core.

Notice anything strange?

Instead of traditional execution cores, Bulldozer chips will be made up of one or more "modules". Each module packs a pair of integer units and a single shared floating-point resource. The latter is actually a pair of 128-bit FMACs, but lets not get ahead of ourselves.
There's a lot more too it though. Read here. http://www.techradar.com/news/comput...in-2011-663795

It's basically more like stream computing than a standard CPU.

Going to be awesome once it's well refined.

Oh, and I researched the PII x6. I doubt it will cost over $400.
And it appears that it will be competing with the quad-core i7 series.
