Someone here posted this before with a simple video on how this new hard drive technology works. It is a reality now and available immediately at some retail stores. Not sure if Newegg has them yet, but they are worth looking into. There are definitely a speed INCREASE for everything that you do including virus scans. Not only is there a speed increase, but you will also get a storage boost with this technology because of the way data are stored. Please read this for more info. This PC World link makes it easy reading for this technology:

Here's some light benchmarks on page two of that link above:

I hope some of you may consider using these new drives and then comment them here on ComputerForums so we can get a general consensus on how reliable they really are.

Umm yeah. I think some Hitachi or Toshiba drives have the PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) Technology, but I know the Seagate 7200.10 has it and it's already out. Newegg.com should have it. Pretty good deal too. For $500 you get the Seagate 7200.10 750gb Hard Drive with PMR and you get a free Maxtor Diamondmax 10 250gb Hard Drive as a combo. That's 50 cents per GB! A good deal if you ask me.

Haha, $500 for 1TB is insane. The 1TB Buffalo Terastation costs about $600+ and it's way slower too because it's external and uses USB or FireWire. I'll be faster if you get the newer ones though, since they now come with a LAN port so you can use it as NAS (Network Attached Storage).
