i have this extact same problem and would also like to know if this is possible. which it is. you would need a infra red receiver on your comp somewhere that signals your computer to turn off/on

I'm pretty sure there are some USB remotes for HTPCs out there...

The windows media center remote has a power down button.

But I'm pretty sure you cannot turn on your computer from any remote.

I suggest you use a stick to pressed the button.

with a wireless mouse though you would have to navigate your way to the start menu from accross the room and unless you have like a 30 inch monitor that would be hard since you could not see the cursor

some bios's will let you power up with a mouse click. if yours does that, your could use a wireless mouse for powering on.
