overclocking a Q6600

Hi,

i dont know the first thing about overclocking.
anyway,

i've heard the Q6600 overclocks real easy and it works quite cool and just as stable at 3GHz as it is in 2.4ghz.

and thats a pretty big difference in speed if u ask me,
so im wondering, should i look into that? and what do i need to maintain the same temperature as it would at 2.4GHz? some sort of special zalman fan and heatsink? (ive never used anything besides stock coolers and ive never overclocked so i have no idea)

and will it be stable? and will all 4 cores still work?

and at 3GHz, will i notice shorter rendernig times in Adobe Premiere? howbout gaming in Crysis and GTA IV?

Before we get started, I can't actually tell from your post whether you own a Q6600.

Before you start OC'ing you'll need temp monitoring and stress testing software. PC Wizard 2008 and Coretemp 0.97 for temp monitoring and Prime95 (make sure it's the latest version) for stress testing to be sure your OC is stable. As for a good HSF, if you don't want to spend much money, then one of these two is perfect:

They are probably the best price to performance coolers currently available. However, if you want to do some extreme overclocking and don't mind spending $50, then this is for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118020
It is however more difficult to mount as it involves removing the mobo and installing a back plate. The other two simply use push pins. I am using the OCZ Vendetta ATM and I'm running at almost 3.5GHz at 37c idle and a safe 55c under load.

just overclocked my Q6600 to 3.0 now..i however want to know where to edit the memory settings im talking about the (4-4-4-12)

can you please tell me where i can edit it thanks

In your BIOS there should be an option to change memory latencies/timings from auto to manual, the enter 4-4-4-12 in the first five and leave the rest on auto if you don't know what the values should be.

Yes, it will, perhaps even more than an increase in speed (800MHz to 1066MHz) due to FSB speeds and the rest of the components.

i have just cheked again, i havent got the option in my menu's have you updated your BIOS?
