Let me know what you think.

When it gets here I am going to wipe it clean and install Windows 7 Professional (free through my school) instead of Home premium. I will also be swapping out the 2x2gb ram with 2x4gb of ram for a total of 8gb DDR3 1333MHZ. I am going to eventually throw a solid state drive in as my second HD.

Which would be a more efficient use of the SSD. Using it as my primary HD and loading my OS on it, or using it as a secondary drive where i will store my media and my VMware files for school?

Putting 8GB of RAM in there is absolutely useless. 4 is more than enough. Why do you need 7 Professional? Will you be using a lot of VPN? A SSD drive is useless for you. Do you really need to kill 5 seconds off your boot time? Just save yourself the money and leave it as is.

I am in a network engineering course. I need to be capable of running multiple virtual machines simultaneously. I don't think the 8gb is overkill in that situation.

How much did your studio 17 cost? I like the specs..but not really into ATI or Dell much :/ I would also think that SSD would always be best suited for OS and games. Let me know how you like it..since I am in a bind about which laptop I should get still...the HP dv7t or the Dell studio 17. both basic specs but different brnds..ecckk. X_X hate "laptop" shopping love desktop part buying

well it was $2500 CND

Seems high BUT that also included the 2 year Complete care package (with low jack etc) which cost $200, a $90 backpack for 17" laptops, a $49 (closer to $70 after enviro fees) and of course over $300 in taxes.

It seems as if I just ordered the same computer 12/31, which should arrive no later than 1/28. It don't make sense that it takes almost a month to recieve it. I have to order a new computer because my HP dv7t went out on me 70 days after warranty. My HP is now showing a black screen, which this seem to be a well known problem with HP's computers. They will not recall this and want money just to tell you what is wrong with it. I will never buy another HP computer again. Now I am out of $1400.00, purchasing a my new Dell computer. I thought computers should last more than a year. Specs of new computer listed below:

Studio 17 Laptop $1400.00

1 Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor @ 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)

No later than January 28th eh? Good luck with that one. I ordered mine December 2nd and still have not received it. It looks as though they have no intention of meeting the updated delivery date of January 18th for me either.

Don't hold your breath. Expect to wait 7+ weeks.

SSD drives are limited in Read/Write, and for you, it'd be better to stick with traditional drives. I run 8GM RAM too, and I don't notice much from 4-6GM really. Stick with it as it is, and if you find the need, then go ahead, but don't throw a SSD drive in there.

Don't hold your breath on Dell's delivery quesses. I think their automatic delivery estimate is about a month, but you can't rely on it at all. A couple of years ago I ordered a Dell laptop. After a half dozen missed delivery promises, I canceled the order at three months (!?!).
Now as a second try with Dell, I'm now waiting on a machine nearly identical to the one you ordered. Order date Dec 7 2009, delivery date Jan 8, 2010. On Jan 7, the day before delivery, I received a 'regrets' email promising further information within 5 business days if the laptop wasn't on its way by then.
That was two weeks ago. I've heard nothing further.
