A server would actually use up all the power if it had enough clients. But then again, server RAM is generally more useful then the amount of server processors. So maybe one FX-60 linked with 8GB of RAM would be more effient then 2 FX-60's with 4GB of RAM. Who knows, in either case, a FX-60 linked with 4GB of RAM is definetly a nice machine.

newegg DOES have quad socket and dual socket opteron (that is socket 940) motherboards. which are ONLY for workstations and server purposes. gamers should not bother with those.
the common mistake that some gamers (mostly new ones) make is that they think that gamers need the most power. the only people that need less computing power than gamers are people who use computers to browse and share media. So if you're looking for a good-great gaming machine you dont need to go top of the line. in fact dual-core (which are top of the line) are not even required by gamers (there are only a couple games that use this technology).
so save your money get something around middle range.
if you're a gamer id get a single core opteron 154 venus (still costs a lot) but its the strongest one out there.

You can't use two FX-60's on a dual-socket motherboard. Only Opterons can, which is why they are labeled 1xx, 2xx and 8xx. 1xx is for uniprocessor systems, 2xx is for dual-processor systems, and 8xx is for 4-8 processor systems. However, only Opterons have those links. Athlon's dont.

Which is why Opterons are so awesome. Imagine having a server with eight 8xx Opterons...that's 16 physical cores! Yes, 8xx Opterons are dual-cores.

Workstation purposes would be 3D-rendering, etc...?

Not like program-intensive web dev, right? Like having Flash, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Imageready open at the same time?

cadd, and other 3d programs use a LOT of processing power, and not to mention ram. for this purpose the dual-core was able to get a good launch. however at the 4-way level (opteron 800 series) workstations are over done, and servers are the only practicle use, unless you're pixar and are rendering thousands of animations.
