Default older mac problem

hey i have a friend that has an older quicksilver mac tower that at the time he paid 5000 dollars for and now it goes on ebay for like 700...well that is besides the fact. he was doing some audio editing, went up to do some laundry came back to it and now it will never turn off screen saver. he has restarted it many times and it just goes to a black screen. you can here it chime up but nothing

reinstall mac os x

umm i cant really think of anything else but maybe a bad hard drive? cant be bad ram or else you wouldnt get the startup chime. umm video card problem?

2gb 400mhz ram OC'ed to 450
