office xp pro frezes on my XP system

hey i have a windows xp comptuer and whenever i try to open a word document on it, the computer freezes and i have to do cntrl alt delte. how can i fix this? why doesnt word open?

I would try doing a re-installation of the Office software, as it seems somethings possibly corrupted.

Can you open Word by opening the program itself manually? Or does it only happen for example, if you try to open a file, that associates itself with Word?
