Microsoft is accelerating the adoption rate for the 64 bits by announcing more and more products compatible with the new processing technology.
And so, after last week's launching of the Windows XP Pro x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 64 bit edition systems, the company has announced that all the servers sustaining the search
engines and software for MSN Search and MSN Messenger have been upgraded to the improved versions of the operating systems.
Microsoft has also started the development of the 64 bit version of Office 12, the successor of Office 2003. Initially, the company intended to develop the 64 bit version of the Office 12 for the AMD 64 platform shortly after the launching of the 32 bit version.
However, from the recent statements made by Microsoft officials, it turns out that Office 12 will be released at least 36 months after Office 2003, so if we make a simple computation, it's clear that the 64 bit version will not be ready sooner than 2006.
Developing an office application series optimized for 64 bits is not fully justified, because these documents never reach large dimensions.
Rarely a PowerPoint document exceeds 50 MB, and regardless of the number of e-mails simultaneously opened with the e-mail client, the stability of the system is never jeopardized.
So, for the time being, the 32 bit Office should and it will do its job, but the company is trying to outline the efforts put into the developing of 64 bit compatible applications and to determine the migration of the users towards the new processing solutions.
