I have been trying to trouble shoot a friends Dell computer. The problem is that the internet connection is that it will not connect to the Windows Update site. Nor to msnbc.msn , But it will go to other pages and site fine. I have set up the network and all is well there. DNS, DHCP etc. The only limiting factor for the setup is they have Nortons's Internet Security installed " a Virus" but even when enabled or disabled I have the same problems. I have the settings for IE set to medium low and have even installed FireFox " which is great" and still the same problems. On my next trip to their house I will upgrade the RAM which is at 256K now "not enough" , but I don't think this is the problem. I have two questions:

(1) Is there a virus or other that would stop loading a Microsoft site?
(2) What could be causing this?

I hope someone can help. Thanks, jeff

have you checked your hosts file?
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS
it will be called just "HOSTS" open it with notepad.

You can replace it with this:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt <right mouse click save as / rename the file and remove the .txt
