ok i decided to get a q6600 instead of the e6850 here is what my specs will be a evga 680i a1 mobo and OZC PC2-8800 ram and a tuniq tower 120 hsf with this setup how far could i overclock this cpu

Depends wheather you are getting the g0 step or not (results are speculative, but it should run slightly cooler when overclocked)

Also, with the heat issues the quad has, you could probably get it close to 3, but I wouldn't think you could push past it.

When working hard at default on mine, a couple of the cores reach around 53 degrees C. I can imagine if I overclocked, this would increase dramatically.

every one is telling me to go with q6600 but witch runs faster and cooler the e6850 or the q6600 right out of the box what i want to do is get the e6850 and wait for the new quads to come out

I would hazard a guess that the E6850 will be the cooler of the two "out of the box" as it only has two cores generating heat as opposed to the Q6600's four cores. I have no first hand experience with the E6850.

3.0GHz is easily attainable on the Q6600 stock cooler though it runs a tad hot, ~62-65°C (using Intel TAT or CoreTemp)

Above 3.0GHz you'll need to look at third party coolers.

With what?... 100 degrees C load or something?
3.6 seems well too high for an air cooler.

A dual core maybe, but not when at load using a 9700, I'm getting 53 already.
