Default Nvidia 8600

Taken from another forum

Quote:
A Chinese site, Beareyes, is claiming that NVIDIA has started production of 8600 based VGA cards, they also got their hands on specifications of the 8600 GT and 8600 Ultra versions.

With the 8600 cards is aiming at the mid-range market, where it will be a replacement for the 7600 GT and 7900 GS. The newest addition to the card is Direct X 10 and the GPU is based on a 80nm production process. The expected price of $149 seems to be a bit higher than initially reported, but this might have to do with the stock of 7600 cards which NVIDIA wants to sell off first.

The 8600 Ultra is expected to cost $179 and gets a core sped of 500Mhz which is comparable with that of the 8800 models. The big difference is in the amount of available shaders, the Ultra will have 64, which is lower than the 96 from the 8800 GTS and 128 of the GTX. The G86 core has no less than 300 million transistors on board and uses a 256-bit memory bus, the memory chips are clocked at 1400Mhz with a max of 512Mb onboard memory.

The 8600 GT only has 48 shaders and a max of 256Mb clocked at 1200Mhz. The GPU runs at 350Mhz which is considerably lower than the Ultra which costs only $30 more.

It'll be interesting to see how these cards perform to really know their price/performance balance.

Why so? Have you even tried one?

If they suck because you own a 8800, then that's normal, but they don't suck for others. If there's a problem with them, then show us a source.

no they dont suck because I have an 8800, they suck because they cant even compete with dx9 cards. Go look at some benchmarks are reviews for the cards. They could have been an amazing card, I believe they were mainly crippled by their 128bit bus. Im sorry if my first comment sounded immature and little unfounded but it really wasnt.

I had planned on getting one until I was able to grab an 8800 as a deal price and now im glad I did.

How can you say they don't comepete with dx9 cards?! they blow them away. the DX 10 processor in it is capable of doing anything a DX9 can do, and do it better. Benchmarks are never like waht you will get in the real world. don't take them as god's words.

I'm still looking at the Radeon X2800/X2900 for my new build. Prices of the 8800s should be dropping soon though.

Celegrom are you sure about that? Look at how they perform in some Dx9 games, look at FEAR, and others. Overall its not nearly as good as was expected.

You really need to consider the price tag that is on the 8600 series, the 8600GTS is a mid ranged card, if we are comparing it with a X1950PRO or a 7900GS the price tags aren't too different, just because it's DX10 doesn't mean it's designed to utterly demolish the DX9 models, DX10 merely allows the cards to support DX10 applications it was never intended to go through the roof on benchmarks. The 8600 series is the perfect card for the budget PC gamer who wants to properly experience Vista, I think nvidia did quite well at delivering such a necessity to it's customers. Not to mention, once AMD releases their R6XX series we'll be seeing prices drop as they compete for the preferences of enthusiasts / gamers alike.
