nVidia 330M framerate problems

A friend of mine is experiencing unusual severe frame rate dips every five minuets or so when he tries to play games. It started happening after he installed the 280.26 WHQL driver. He downgraded back to 270.61 and then even further to 260 with no improvements. Has anyone had any similar problems with this chipset before or know of any solutions other than driver swapping ?

is it possible that when those fps drops appears the game is loading files from the HDD or some other form of loading happens. like some spawns of objects or AI?

Sporadic loss of FPS doesn't sound like driver problems, driver problems usually manifest themselves in much more serious problems, or at least make it seem much more serious. Turn all the settings down to lowest and see if it still happens, that way you can rule out the chip being the problem. If it's an online game it could be the up/down speed of his internet connection, or like Echo says, if his drive is painfully slow, the game would slow to a crawl while it pulls game files.

OH and i had another thought, Things like MSAA don't run too well on 320s/330s chips, especially if the maps are big.
