ok everyone, now that i've got my dad happy with his new computer... its time for one of my own

but what i realized is im really not going to be doing that much gaming over the games that i already have (guild wars, bf2\2142, starcraft)

so here is what i have selected...

-LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH22NS30

-Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

-Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

-ASRock A790GXH/128M AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

-EVGA 512-P3-1150-TR GeForce GTS 250 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

-BFG Tech GS-550 550W ATX12V V2.2 / EPS12V V2.8 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply

-G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ

-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor

-XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler

-Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

-Logitech 967973-0403 Black 104 Normal Keys PS/2 Standard Deluxe 250 Desktop

-Genius SP-S110 100W (P.M.P.O.) 2.0 Black Speaker

-Acer X193Wb Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 2000:1 ACM

thanks again for all of your guys help =]

Drop the arctic silver 5 and go with some MX-2 or TX-2

Do you have an Operating System?

Everything else looks perfect, when will you order it?

Are you ordering this from Newegg? I assume so as all the parts I entered in the search bar were found.

I added all the components up and it came to ~$620.

The burner is out of stock... again :D

I would go with the HD 4850 over the GTS 250. The two are identical in performance but the HD 4850 is cheaper and your motherboard supports Crossfire which will offer a good upgrade path in the future.
EDIT: Sapphire's has a $15 off promo code bringing it down to $95.
RE-EDIT: Or MSI's comes with Rainbow 6 Vegas 2
I'd also go with some 1066 memory, it's only a few $ more and will go better with a Phenom.
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor
TBH, the 6400 has had it's day. It is (was) produced on the 90nm process and gobbles way too much power for the performance it offers, even it's price isn't very appealing any more. You'd much prefer the Phenom II X2 550, it is a 45nm part running at 3.1GHz and is a fair bit faster than the 6400+ for less.

And +1 to the MX-2.

ill probably end up overclocking

ok, thanks will go with the mx-2

alright...... the phenom II dual core will run on that board right? also, the 1066 will run because the AM3 is pretty much an AM2+

new parts i have selected...

-HP Black 22X DVD+R 12X DVD-RAM SATA 22X Multiformal DVD Writer

-ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound

-AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core Processor

-HIS Hightech H485FN1GP Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card (free s.t.a.l.k.e.r. clear sky) - only $110 after MIR

-Scythe SCKTN-3000 92mm Sleeve "KATANA3" 3Heat Pipes CPU Cooler

-G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK

Yes, the Phenom II X2 is backwards compatible with socket AM2+ motherboards. The DDR2 1066 more closely matches the speed and bandwidth offered by the CPU.

I would try to contact ASrock to see if they do support it since they might have not updated that list yet listing it as supported. I really don't know why it wouldn't be supported since it says it support the AM3 up to 140w and it supports all the other AM3 CPU's but if it was me I would just get in touch with them to be sure.
