Default new processor for 97 Gateway

I have a 97 Gateway with a Pentium 2 processor and i found a newer computer in the garbage and it has a Pentium 3 processor can i just replace it or do i need updates like drivers.

Lp Mini Tower Tbr E_4200 500

or it might be E-4200

and the 97 Gateway is G6-233

it might be a different CPU socket
from Pent 2 to Pent 3
not sure though

I believe you are in luck my friend. Pentium II and Pentium II are both supposed to fit into Slot 1.

I hope you're not going to try to run anything better than like Puppy Linux or DSL (Damn Small Linux) on it. I mean a 97 Gateway, that is 12 years old...shit.

I put it in it starts fine until i get to after Windows 97 loads then nothing happens

im assuming so
i know that this is ment for mobos, but cpus are on them

just skip the stuff thats not needed and look at the CPU part of it
that might be what you are missing

Is windows 97 on there? If it is, get something else. Windows 97 was just a beta that ended up getting released as a service pack for windows 95. If you want, I'll even GIVE you my copy of xp. You would not want to try running windows 7 on there. I don't think it would even run on it (requires at least 1GHz CPU and 1GB RAM).
