Default New processor

I want to get a new processor, but I'm not sure if my motherboard will be able to use it. Is there anyway I can see what my motherboard will be able to use? Because in the computer I'm changing the processor for has like a 1.1GHz I think, and I want to change it to 2.9GHz.
And if I have to buy a new motherboard, will I be able to use my current RAM, hard-drive and everything without trouble and without losing data on the hard drive?
