Default New OS on a second HDD.

I currently have a 160GB internal HDD running as my primary but I wanted to purchase another HDD and install another OS on it (don't want to bother with partitioning the darn thing.) I wanted to know what things will I need to be aware off before I can successfully install a OS on this new HDD? Will I have to make the new HDD my primary HDD temporarily etc.?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Thank you for the response. Lets say for instance that the HDD is not recognized, then how would I handle that?

Thanks again.
