New help building a computer

Well my current computer is about 6 years old and the videocard has gone bad by glitchy gameplay all the time. I just wanna start fresh and build a good gaming PC for a around $900-$1000. Can you guys give me some examples what some good builds? Help would be appreciated.

What exactly are you going to be using this PC for?

web browsing?
ect...

give us some detailed examples of what you want to do with it, and we will help you pick out what you need.

Everyone says this baby is awesome, and is highly overclockable.

Motherboard about $150
I don't think I know enough about motherboards to give you a good recommendation, but it has to be socket 775. I'd recommend DDR2 RAM compatibility, because that is going to be the new standard in a few months. Also IMO Asus makes excellent mobos

Graphics Card $319
There's currently a sweet deal on Newegg for the Geforce 7950GT which is basically the fastest graphics card out currently without linking 2 together. For gaming, you really do want to go all out on the graphics card.

RAM $215
2 GB of Corsair DDR2 667. You can't really go wrong with Corsair.

Power Supply about $75
It's really your preference, get one with at least 550 watts. Antec makes very nice ones.

Hard Drive about $100
It's really your preference here, the Western Digital Raptor is very fast, but is only 74 GB and is very expensive. I'd just get 1 250GB Hard drive for storage, but if you want you can by both.


You also have to buy a few more things:
a case
DVD Drive
network card? (if not integrated to the mobo)
cooling (fans)

We went a little over the budget, but this is a lightning quick PC. I assumed you didn't need a monitor, but if you do, get at least a 19" witha response time less than 16ms. If you need to make it cost less, get a different graphics card. I'd recommend this:

I'd say what he^ said, with a few comments.
ASUS does make good mobo's, as I'm using one right now and it's pretty good. However, they are pretty pricey and there have been compatability issues with RAM and such, and ASUS's newest bards, including mine, do have their quirks. I have heard many complaints about their P5 boards for the Core 2 Duos, but I have never used one so I cannot tell you firsthand. Do some research on that.

Second, for Hard drive I would go with a Seagate 7200.10. They are pretty darn fast, and cost a fraction of the raptor's price with more storage. Hard drive performance does matter, but not as much as the other essentials. It won't really hold you back and I don't think Raptors are worth the money unless you've got enough money to flush down the toilet. (Maybe that was a little harsh, but point is I couldn't justify buying one for their price.)

Does Corsair have DDR2-800s that work on the P5's? You could step up and grab that.

Everything else looks ideal, but you may expect to spend a little more on the power supply if you go high wattage. Mine was about $115, but it's a nice 600W from OCZ.

Change the processor the the E6400, get a Gigabyte DS3, change the video card to a 7900GTO, get a Corsair HX620.

Total parts 832, gives you room for a really nice case. Total production cost for me was with 2 LED 120 Fans, full tower case, and CPU cooler 965... Really great deal and it runs beatifully all parts worked straight up no glitches. COuld prob get a better GPU if you wanted but 7600 is fine.
