New Hardware

I've heard that in a few months there will be a standard in all new computer hardware coming out and old stuff will not be compatible. What does that mean for my current pc? I have to update my graphics card to play things like Half Life 2 (if it ever comes out) and according to what i have heard i may have to buy a new pc to future proof for a couple of years as stuff wont simply slot in.

Any help would be great.

I don't know what you mean what are your computer specs?

I was reading PC Zone and they said on the hardware page that during the summer every major component in my base unit will change and that there is no way to future proof a pc at the moment. Nobody else seems to know anything about this so I am stumped.
