Default new external hd

ok so i just bought a new 320 gig external hd and im well aware of the software on it taking space but when i hooked it up it only shows as 298 that seems like way to much of a difference.

Nope, that's just right. I have a 320 gig hard drive, it shows up as 298.

Basically, it's because of the different definitions of 1 GB. Hard drive manufacturers say 1 GB is 1000 MB, whereas Windows recognizes 1 GB as 1024 MB. Obviously, the manufacturer's way would make it seem like there is more space on the drive for marketing purposes, because you're saying less space is in 1 GB.
