New Computer or Join computers???

I want to make/improve a computer. I can get several of them for free. Should I just get the parts out of the different computers and put that in the one case or should I join them all together??? If I should join, are there any tutorials (or can you explain to me) on how to do this??? By joining I mean connecting them so that they all work together on the one monitor. Is there a cable that does this or do they need to be exactly the same computers?

What will you use the computer for, Internet surfing, Work processing, Gaming ?
