I have just built a computer it runs fine
When I put the plug for the monitor into my video card it doesn't show any picture

I know it is working becuase when I take the plug out it says the plug isnt in and it works when i plug it into my laptop.

Can anyone help me please?

If it has onboard graphics you could plug it into that, when it windows (assuming that's what you are running) you should be able to enable your graphisc card from there or install it correctly, you might lose your visual again, just restart and plug it your monitor into your graphics card.

try reseating your graphics card in the slot closest to the CPU, the BIOS should recognize it and set it as default display device

There could be 3 things wrong if you're not getting video:
  1. Your graphics card is FUBAR
  2. Your graphics card is not seated correctly (like mentioned by zKilla)
  3. Motherboard is FUBAR (therefore not posting)
Those are the ones I can think of. If you're hearing beeps then it's another problem. Let's hope it's not option 3 as this will take a while to confirm. May I also add that there could be many other things being the factor, but from my experience these 3 are the most common.

bad mobo
haven't switched in BIOS to new car
onboard video is bad
possible dead psu if car has seperate psu cable.
