New build is having issues with operating system

Ok, thanks. Also, would it be better to upgrade to vista first and then upgrade to seven from there? Also, my comp still doesn't read the upgrade. It loads the disc, but the install screen just flashes for a split second and disappears. It's a Sony Vaio upgrade, but I don't see why that would matter.
