My old desktop is rather old so I'm looking to replace it. A lot of it is pretty worn or outdated so It's more or less a full replacement.

This is the build I was considering. I took the majority of from the sticky with some changes. What I would like to verify that this is all comparable and will fit in the case. As well as if this is actually what components I want for my desired use. (More info below).

My main use of the computer is World of Warcraft and other MMOs along with the occasional First Person Shooter. I have a 23" 1920 x 1080 Monitor and wish to utilize the highest resolution for games as well as the highest available settings.

I plan on going the Windows 7 (64bit) route and I assume drivers will be straight forward. Microsoft offered discounts for students for the Office pack and a Windows 7 upgrade yet I did not see a full OS discount. Am I looking in the right place or is there not a discount on that?


Any glaring problems and or recommendations?
 
Yea a couple things need updating on that sticky...

Go with the Intel Core i7-930. It's cheaper than the Intel Core i7-920 has a slightly higher stock Fq and will over-clock slightly better too. A no-brainer really.

You could also have a look at the Asus P6X58D-E. It's another great mobo.

With 1366/X58 motherboards it's better to utilise the tri-channel on-die controller by using tri-channel RAM, like the Corsair Dominator 3GB (3 x 1GB) 1600Mhz RAM or similar. Don't bother getting dual channel RAM with Socket B setups.

The 1GB GTX 460 will outperform the HD5850 at all except hi-res/multi-monitor 3D gaming.
 
The i7-930 and the RAM make sense, I'll change those on my build.

I utilized This link to compare the graphics cards and it shows the HD5850 above the GTX 460, however I'm more inclined to believe this forum rather then the site.

What differences am I looking at between the two motherboards?

Asus P6X58D-E Vs. ASUS P6T Which specs and or features make me want to buy the more expensive one?
 
The 3GB of RAM Remeniz listed seems a bit low. Is This the sort of RAM I'm looking for?

Is there a comparison page between the 1GB GTX 460 and the HD5850 somewhere?

Going to go with the Asus P6X58D-E aswell.

Also thanks for the Combo links, I wasn't aware of them.
 
I agree on the CPU outside of that your PC will run what you need to run perfectly fine. 5850 is a powerful card.
