The Q6600 is the way to go right now if you're not overclocking. Read up on it. If you are going to overclock, the similarly priced Core 2 Duos are better, just because a decent overclock will dramatically increase speeds.
The fact that he's using CAD just pushes him more in the direction of a Core 2 Quad.
