Default Network interface cards?

Hey I have onboard network basicly a ethernet onboard, I want to know I have a pci network interface card will it be better than using an onboard one, apparently getting seprate functions is better like getting a sound card other than using onboard apparently it realses the strain off the motherboard. can somone varify this for me please??
