Default nervious about first setup of RAID 1

so i recently lost my main hard drive and had to recover all of my software
which i now have about $1K easily on there
and i dont want to have to deal with the whole process again
so i decided to make a RAID 1 array
i have 2 1 TB HDD (931 GB each)
but here is my issue
i dont want to loose that information again
[url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188024]here is my mobo

so how do i make sure that i wont loose my data on my current primary drive?
i dont have anyplace to backup my hard drive and i have no way to clone it
im hopeing that i could take the primary hard drive and tell my mobo to keep the data on my primary and copy it over to my secondary
is this even possible?

and if one drive fails, could i turn off the RAID and have it boot from the second drive?

thanks for all of the help
If you think you can, you CAN! If you think you cant, your right.
