If your going to be spending that much, you might want to consider getting an i7 setup.

I'd agree about getting an i7 setup, it won't actually cost much more as you could probably save a bit on the GPU.

i7 920
Gigabyte X58
3x1GB DDR3 1333

You can get a GTX 260 for cheaper than $300, but since that motherboard supports CF, I'd recommend going with a HD 4870, it's pretty much identical in performance to the GTX 260.

If you're not overclocking, don't bother with an aftermarket cooler, stock cooling will be fine and you can save some money.

You can save some money on the PSU as well, this will be more than sufficient for that build.

The only thing about the i7 setup was I could only install ddr3 on them, and after reading things on ddr3 vs ddr2 I didn't hear many good things about the former

Well i7 is the future of computers
i7 reminds me of the quads, I know someones gonna jump all over this post and tell me I'm wrong, but if you want a future-proof computer go with the i7
i7 is useful for multi-threaded applications, so are quads
I believe they're also good for gaming because they are just so fast; but they do get hot.

There isn't anything bad about DDR3, it's just until i7, there was no reason to choose it over DDR2.
