Yeah, try that if it works. You might be able to get an adapter to put the hard drive in a regular desktop PC as well if needed.

what ever i do here a cannot use the recovery disc a new cd rom is about £200 pound its not worth it
there must be a way of getting the laptop to boot the usb in to use the external drive

They should as long as it's a standard size laptop optical drive...why not take the current one out to see if it's the same?

instead of waiting for a delivery, try taking a working cd drive from another laptop and plugging it into the laptop that won't boot up, use the recovery disk and then switch them back, at least the laptop will work until the drive gets delivered...

That's a good idea. Then if that works, you know the problem is the CD drive and you can order a new one.
