need help changing "type of file"

So I made a file into an .exe and I can't figure out how to get it back to a jpeg. How do i do this because when I go to rename it and type in "filename.jpeg" it stays a .exe file. Hopefully some1 will chime in for me the document is kind of important to me

i use this all the time,

you have to set windows to show you the extensions
in xp go to tools-folder options-view-hide extensions for known files
uncheck that box
and then click ok
then you can rename it to a .jpeg or w/e

How long should the program take because it seems to be not responding the container is 30gb

with the program,
you have to drag the 30gb file into the .exe launcher of the program

ok I used both ways and they both had some serious lag...
Long story short boths ways would have worked; just decided to use the "program".
Let it work (convert it) while I was out having drinks.
