Default Need help building a new computer and looking for a decent laptop.

Hey guys.

I'm planning on doing some freelance work in the computer world (build websites, graphics, programming, etc.) And I'm looking for a computer that is a great multitasker (duo core processor and probably 2 gigs of memory) and a pretty big hard drive (thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 gigs, though I can go a tad bit lower if necessary). I'm also in the market for the same qualities in a laptop, though I'm not expecting a 500 gig hard drive of course.

I'd say my max budget would be about 2,000 for both.

Thanks guys.

Nah I thought he was looking for more the laptop than the Desktop, hence, why I gave him two choices. I'd prefer the guy to take the Acer as well.

Right now I'm placing particular emphasis on the laptop. I'll be moving up to Kansas City to live with my girlfriend in August of next year. I'll be dragging my current computer (a desktop) with me. Because of college coming up, I need a laptop that has a ton of space to run programs and such. I'll be doing A LOT of coding on it, notetaking, web design (including graphic development) etc. As far as the desktop goes, I'm planning on redoing it, but it'll get done when it gets done, which may take 2-3 years.

Right now, ideally, I'm looking for a 1G memory, 80GB hard drive, and a duo core processor, though I can live with single core if it's relatively decent.

I'd recommend nothing less than a:

QX6850 or AMD Phenom FX or X4
4-16GB of DDR3-1800
Windows Vista 64 and XP 32 Dual-Booted
and an EVGA 8800GTX, 8950GX2, or 9800GTX, all with at least 640MB of VRAM

^ that'll be your mid-range even by 2009, by 2010.. different story.

I just bought a tablet laptop from hp; 2 gig ram, dual core, 1.8... it's a small one, 13.1 inches, widescreen, with a built in mic, camera, dvd writer, fingerprint thingamajig, for 1150. and the best thing is that the speakers are really loud and clear! (at least for a non-gaming laptop, i think)

Ah yes, I have a 17 inch laptop, and this 13.1 inch laptop. The 17 inch isn't a backbreaker, but it's a hell of a lot more luggage than the 13.1. So you might also consider size if you're going to be carrying it around with you all the time.

Change in plans guys, I just found out that all of my classes will be online so I no longer require a tablet laptop. But keep the suggestions coming. Deals are sweet
