What Intel processor would be the best for a high performance gaming computer? I was thinking either a i5 or i7.

Yes. Any intel or amd CPU on the market will. For a gaming system, a phenom ii will do better though. Wait a day and they will have hex-cores out, with one model slated to be under $200, and all of them being under 300.
