When you get a new hard drive and install OS, try setting the old one as a slave and maybe you might be able to get into it to get info from it.

Could you not just take your hard drive out then put it into another system and then get your files that way or I'm sure there is a Live CD which will run Linux so you can back up and take all of your files off but I've forgotten what its called.

Well it could be just a bad boot sector. Try unplugging your ide plug out of the hard drive and plugging it back in.

my old hard drive used to fail every week and thats what i'd do
