Default Need buying help for Laptop

Wondering if some of you could help.
I am looking to buying a new computer, and am thinking of getting a laptop to replace my pc.

What I need is a laptop that, when at my desk I can hook up to my large monitor and my wireless keyboard/mouse. And want it to be fairly compact for when i travel so it should have a smallish screen and good battery life.

Also I want it to be fairly future proof without it having to be the very best. I want to be able to play games and do work and watch movies.

So what kind of setup should I go for? I have been looking at the Dell XPS range and wonder if they are good value and if they are powerful enough. Willing to spend around 1000 (maybe more if needed), but also maybe less if can get the job done cheaper :-)

If anyone has suggestions for a build, or specific components I should be looking for, be of great help. E.g. which CPU, RAM, Video Card specifically.
