How about turn it off when not in use and set the power settings for auto off after a amount of time

Where abouts im using XP have looked in all the obvious places on my monitor control panel (nvidia)

right clci on the desktop > properties

select screen saver tab.

press power button, if your monito is able to be turned off you'll be able to set it here after a certain time.
