Well, the ending to this story turned out bitter sweet. After replacing the motherboard and verifying that my original issue was resolved, I reassembled the thing, and only later discovered that I then had no LAN. The NIC is integrated onto the DC board, so again I go with my screwdriver, fully disassembling yet again.

In the end, replacing both boards and fooling a bit with the BIOS brought back the lan card, and original charging issues were resolved.
