Default My laptop display is REALLY dark! HELP!

So I have an ASUS G50VT and have had no issues with it for several years until now. All of the sudden the display cut out and I can barely see anything. I know it isn't the graphics card because when I hook up an external monitor it looks fine. Just looking for some fixes I can do myself without paying hundreds for a repair. Any help is appreciated!

Some lappy displays use floro tubes as the back light. If the inverter has died it's simple to replace it. I've had a few poop out over the years. Now I only use lappys that have LED back lighting.

Well how can I know if my laptop uses floro tubes or has an LED screen? And when I do figure that out how can i determine what the actual problem is, between faulty wiring, dead bulb, etc... ? Also I don't know if this helps but the laptop was purchased in 2009 from BestBuy, so it is not that old. Thanks for the responses!!
